EOC - Mike Bohatch - "Frequently Asked Questions - Bands"
  1. How long does it take to create a single image if I choose to commission you for custom work?
My general timeline is 2 weeks leeway per project (image). This is for custom only. Some concepts are harder to realize than others, it really depends on what is asked to create. I can tell you I like to get a job done way before the deadline, if possible even if I stay up all night doing it. But also I allow a few days to scrutinize the piece. In other words, I like to create a piece then look at it with a fresh perspective 2-4 days after to determine any needed changes or composition things that need be altered. This is the period of fine-tuning that shapes a piece into form and sometimes the most crucial part. .

  2. Do you prefer to incorporate the logo and title?
It's up to you, as some bands prefer different options. Though that part is included if you want me to add them. Which is adding your logo and designing the release title placement. Logo design and creation itself costs extra.

  3. Do we have to be a signed act to commission art?
No, all clients are treated the same regardless of signing status. Many covers I have done for bands have gone on to get deals anyways. So commissioning cover art even early has proved to be good for marketing purposes and the labels appreciate the fact that cover art is already ready for them to promote you..

  4. How do you deal with custom work and requested concepts?
Because of the great deal of time involved with a project or piece, I prefer to gather all info needed up front before even beginning. This includes style, color scheme, needed elements, presentation and any necessary info to realize your cover concept. I don't supply "proofs-in-process" as that only confuses what the end piece will be. I do though provide a proof per email to get approval when the final is complete. I also don't usually make attempts to provide multiple versions for the client to decide, except if the logo placement and such is in question. I believe in creating 1 solid image that best represents the ideas at hand. I think this method is the most professional and eliminates the need for wishy washy half done concepts..

  5. Do you re-issue the cover image for other acts?
No, if you've commissioned a piece. It would only conflict your marketing by allowing another act to use the image to promote themselves. There has been a few limited run exceptions, but on the most part the cover image commissioned is there to promote "your" act only. Of course, I still retain the copyrights in the interest of promoting my work, or using the image as a portfolio piece in a publication or book..

  6. What music style do you prefer to design for?
Really I allow my work to be commissioned by "all acts interested". Because of the nature of my images, you'll see them more likely on Goth, metal, industrial, rock and alternative type acts. But I myself enjoy the diversity of working with different groups
